European Health Data Space: Turning the vision of connected health data into reality in intensive care

Healthcare is generating more data than ever before. Every day, hospitals collect valuable information from electronic health records, laboratory tests, medical imaging, bedside monitoring systems, clinical studies, and medical devices. When used responsibly, these data can help improve patient care, accelerate research, and support the development of new healthcare solutions. Projects such as ICUdata4EU contribute to this vision by developing practical solutions that enable secure and interoperable health data collaboration in intensive care across Europe.
Although enormous amounts of health data already exist, they are rarely connected. Hospitals and healthcare organisations often use different systems, standards, and processes, making it difficult to bring data together for research, innovation, and better patient care.
The European Health Data Space (EHDS) aims to address these challenges by creating a common European framework for the secure, interoperable, and trustworthy use of electronic health data. It supports two complementary goals: giving citizens greater control over their own health information and enabling the responsible use of health data for research, innovation, and improved healthcare delivery. Achieving these objectives requires not only a common regulatory framework but also practical infrastructures that enable secure and interoperable collaboration across healthcare institutions.
For healthcare systems, the success of the EHDS will depend on more than regulation. It requires practical solutions, trusted infrastructures, and close collaboration between healthcare providers, researchers, technology experts, and patients. These solutions must enable data sharing while ensuring security, privacy, governance, and continued institutional responsibility. ICUdata4EU is one example of how these principles can be translated into practical solutions by developing the technical and organisational foundations needed for trusted health data collaboration in intensive care.
This challenge is particularly relevant in intensive care medicine. Intensive care units (ICUs) are highly data-rich environments, generating large volumes of complex and continuously changing information from patient monitoring, clinical documentation, laboratory measurements, treatments, and medical devices. These data provide unique opportunities to better understand critical illness, improve clinical decision-making, and advance research — but they are currently often isolated within individual hospitals and systems.
ICUdata4EU is working to bridge this gap by translating the principles of the European Health Data Space into practical solutions for intensive care. The project develops secure and interoperable infrastructures that enable the trustworthy secondary use of intensive care data across institutions for research and innovation while preserving data sovereignty, governance, and trust. By connecting expertise, technologies, and healthcare communities across Europe, ICUdata4EU contributes to a future where health data can be used more effectively and responsibly — transforming data into knowledge and knowledge into better outcomes for critically ill patients.
