Smarter Intensive Care through Connected Data

ICUdata4EU addresses the challenges that Intensive Care Units are facing, such as aging society and a shortage of specialised staff, while strengthening the ability to respond to crisis situations such as future pandemics or wars.

Hospitals joining ICUdata4EU become part of a European data ecosystem that enables more connected, comparable, and data-driven intensive care. By contributing ICU data in a standardized and secure way, participating hospitals gain access to harmonized datasets, cross-border research opportunities, and new ways to benchmark and improve clinical outcomes based on real-world evidence.

ICUdata4EU brings together intensive care data from healthcare systems across Europe and turns it into a shared, interoperable foundation for research and innovation. Built on established standards such as FHIR, the project ensures data use  across different hospital IT environments without requiring major local changes.

For hospitals, this reduces ICU data fragmentation and improves overall data consistency and quality, while making it significantly easier to participate in international research initiatives. At the same time, data ownership and control remain fully with the participating institutions, with privacy and GDPR compliance embedded by design.
